Lunar Eclipse, 3 March 2007

These pictures were taken with a Nikon D70 attached to my telescope, a 200mm f/5 reflector. (This is equivalent to a 1000mm lens, or 1500mm on a 35mm film camera.)

I took about three dozen pictures in total, expecting that many of them wouldn't come out. As the camera will only work in full manual mode when connected to the telescope, I had to find the correct exposure by trial and error. Also, the focusing is a bit hit-and-miss, and you can only really tell whether it is correct once you check on the computer. On this occasion I was lucky.

Several of the pictures formed a sequence as the Moon came out of the Earth's shadow - I made some of these into a mini movie, shown below. Click on play to run the sequence, or select one of the numbered frames individually.

I took advantage of the lunar eclipse to take a photograph of the Moon and stars at the same time. Normally, either the Moon is properly exposed and the stars invisible, or the stars properly exposed and the Moon washed out and dazzlingly bright. I reckon that any photograph with the stars and Moon both clearly visible must be a hoax.
