Scene 2

Blasted heath, front of tabs. Enter 3 witches.

Morag             It's working! It's working! He thinks he's won.

Isabel              We just need to tell him he's invincible, and organise his downfall.

Katy                How does that work, then?

Morag             Well, Katy hen, we make out that everything's wonderful, then sneak in a catch.

Katy                Like when they have competitions with free gifts.

Isabel              Exactly.

Morag             Oh, if only Agnes were here now. She would be so proud.

Katy                What happened to Agnes anyway? You're always talking about her.

Isabel              We don't like to say.

Morag             It was very sad.

Katy                Is it something to do with how you don't do witchcraft any more?

Isabel              That, and the other thing.

Katy                What other thing?

Morag             Some of our spells went a bit wrong.

Katy                Like what?

Isabel              Well, not all of them. Some of them turned out just fine. We got that nice Mr Mandela out of jail, for example. That worked out quite well.

Morag             And we cast a spell on Reagan and Gorbachev to make them the best of friends. That went very well.

Katy                But what went wrong?

Morag             Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Make a nice change, and everything.

Isabel              And do our bit for the sisterhood.

Morag             We just thought it would be nice to have a woman for prime minister.

Katy                You mean ...

Morag             Yes. It was us who got her elected.

Katy                I see.

Morag             But we learned an important lesson from this.

Isabel              Be careful making wishes.

Morag             They might not work out as you planned,
And even if they do...

Isabel              They cannot bring unending joy,
Or peace on Earth...

Katy                It's true.
