Sun Pillars

The first picture above was taken as the sun set. Ice crystals in the atmosphere reflect sunlight back down to the observer, giving the appearance of a line rising up vertically. In the second photograph only a short stretch of sun pillar can be seen. This is known as a false sun - the actual sun was below the horizon and about to rise when the picture was taken. Another one can be seen below, in a photograph taken as the real sun was rising.
