International Space Station

This is the International Space Station, filmed with my home-made low light camera on 7 December 2003. Unfortunately the stars aren't so bright and hardly show up unless I turn the brightness up to the point where the picture becomes noisy. Note that the spacecraft seems to disappear because it is passing into the Earth's shadow.

The animation below is created from eleven 5-second exposures, though I should have taken more. I stopped, thinking the ISS had moved out of view. Jupiter is the bright star near the centre, with Saturn below and to its right, just above the clouds. Venus should also have been visible, but I think the neighbour's house must be in the way.

Check the excellent web site Heavens Above for information on how to see the ISS for yourself.
