The Minor Planet Ceres

pic of Ceres

In the winter of 2021/2022 I attempted to photograph the dwarf planet Ceres (formally known as an asteroid). I knew it would be little more than a pixel, so several photographs taken some time apart would allow me to identify it as a dot moving in a nearly straight line. According to the web site Heavens Above it would be between the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters, which I can find in the night sky and could see from my window. This meant I would be able to set up my camera indoors away from the cold. In the end I managed to take five pictures about one week apart, with one gap of a fortnight due to bad weather. The moon also got in the way sometimes.

The picture at the top of the page shows Ceres along with the Hyades and Pleiades, plus a photobombing satellite. There's a closeup view of the central area as well. The satellite appears as several streaks because I took several short exposures and "stacked" them to create the final image. If you look closely you might be able to see another one.

All five of my photographs can be seen below in a sequence, along with another pesky satellite.
